2018 Fellowship winners:

Frank Manjang of Zaria Academy (Nigeria) won for a writing project. His idea, “Questioning the Question,” helps students with paragraph structure and logic by helping them contextualize–and imagine relevant connections to–the question they are asked to address in writing.

Sam Sebastien Kouabenan of Lycée Municipal de Tanda, Tanda (Ivory Coast) won for a project in French as a second (or third) language. Mr. Kouabenan engages the students in a competitive process, chiefly involving the skills of reading French out loud. The meta-cognitive aspect is that they see what elements of their performance are used in grading them compared to their peers.

Nicole Guyon of Community Prep School, Providence, RI, won for a blended classroom innovation. Faced with the challenges of different abilities in an eighth grade algebra classroom, she has used techniques learned through FUSE training to group students and to best respond to different needs.

Neal Bogosian of Jacqueline M. Walsh High School, RI, won for a project to teach a course in film and video. It is believed to be the only full term course of its kind in the state. The class will learn technical production, artistic values but also funding, publicity and distribution skills.

2017

Aderanti Adedeji, of Zaria Academy, Shika, Nigeria, has won our Summer Fellowship for an outstanding chemistry innovation. Students learn through contact with basic materials. Compounds and substances from everyday life are examined for their chemical content. Abstract formulas become more concrete, and, in addition, students see concrete daily reminders of their lesson.

Cauley Greene, of Community Prep School, also won this Fellowship for innovative teachers. His teaching strategy is to demonstrate plot structures in fiction as basic shapes–often repeating in many different works. This helps students grasp and retain the narratives. It also sharpens their analytical skills, and gives them a tool for all future reading.
